Understanding GreenPowerTM

GreenPower is provided to customers by purchasing (and acquiting) Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) that have been sourced from generators which comply with the stringent requirements of the national GreenPower scheme. The purchase of these certificates provides the additional payment required by  renewable generators to operate and supply power to the national grid. The REC price is determined by the market forces to ensure generator viability at the lowest economic cost.

"Decoupled" Providers

Providers such as ACX, are independent of the large electrcity retailers and provide the GreenPower service separate from the standard power contract. Purchasing is done through the spot market which can be significantly cheaper and more flexible than than through a retail contract. This system is also more convenient in terms of timing and more transparent in terms of the generating source, the security of certificates and visibility of audit trail.

Business users of GreenPower are increasingly likely to purchase their GreenPower "decoupled" from their standard power contract.

GreenPower and the NCOS

- VCMA Discussion Paper -

In November 2009 the federal government launched its National Carbon Offset Standard.

It was silent on GreenPower.

The VCMA discussion paper looks at the issues for GreenPower buyers and Carbon Accountants when making claims of Carbon Neutrality. See full paper here.

GreenPower Pricing.

ACX GreenPower contract prices are determined by the spot market and may change on an daily basis.

While spot market pricing is volatile it can be as much as 50% cheaper than prices charged under standard retail contracts.

rec graph

The market for renewable energy has been volatile over the past year and customers who have remained in close contact with their provider have been able to take advantage of low points in the market.
